“We have carried out our first military operation using ballistic missiles against sensitive Israeli military targets,” the Houthis announced on Saturday morning.
In the same statement, they said that “our operations will continue until the declared goals are achieved. We will continue until the aggression on all fronts stops.”
The Houthis said the attack on Israel was in response to ongoing attacks on infrastructure in Iran, Lebanon, Iraq and the Palestinian territories.
Who are the Houthis?
The Houthis are an armed political and religious organization that supports Yemen's Shiite Muslim minority.
They declare that they are part of the "axis of resistance" led by Iran against Israel, the US and the West in general.
Officially known as Ansar Allah (“Supporters of God”), the group emerged in the 1990s and was named after its late founder, Hussein al-Houthi. The current leader is his brother, Abdul Malik al-Houthi.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say they have detected a rocket launched from Yemen, which according to Reuters and AFP is the first launch from Yemen recorded since the start of the war.
This development comes after a statement from a spokesman for the Houthi rebels, who indicated that they would be involved in the war in the Middle East if attacks on Iran continued.
