A 32-year-old woman in Ireland has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her partner's four-year-old son, Mason O'Connell Conway. The court found the defendant responsible for a series of serious acts of violence against the child, which ended in his death.
The victim's father, 36-year-old John Paul O'Connell, was previously sentenced to seven years in prison for child endangerment, neglect and obstructing investigations, after he allegedly knew or believed that his partner had killed his son and attempted to cover up the incident.
Judge Paul McDermott also ordered the convict to serve an additional four years and six months in prison for two counts of child cruelty, relating to abuse in the weeks and months before the murder. These sentences will run concurrently with the life sentence.
During the trial, it was proven that the child had been subjected to continuous physical abuse and had been isolated for several days before the fatal act. Investigations revealed that the father and his partner had attempted to deceive medical personnel regarding the origin of the injuries.
The child's mother, Elizabeth Conway, said after the verdict that no sentence could bring her son back, describing him as a loving, intelligent child and a source of joy to the family. She stressed that the legal process had been extremely difficult for her, after years of waiting for justice.
