Israel's far-right Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has paid a visit to Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank, near Ramallah, sparking strong reactions and controversy. According to media reports, stun grenades were used near Palestinian prisoners' cells during the visit, days before the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
Ben-Gvir entered the prison accompanied by senior police officials, including Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai. During the inspection, the minister stated that the harsh measures imposed in prisons are not enough and promised to push forward legislation allowing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners accused of attacks on Israelis.
"This is not a luxury hotel, it is a real prison," he said, praising the changes that, according to him, have transformed the conditions of detention.
Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations have reported that conditions for Palestinian prisoners have deteriorated significantly since Ben-Gvir took office in late 2022, citing strict restrictions, shortages and cases of abuse.
According to data published in early February, over 9,000 Palestinians, including minors, are being held in Israeli prisons.
Ben-Gvir is one of the most controversial figures in the Israeli government and has publicly advocated a tougher policy towards Palestinian prisoners. His visit to Ofer prison comes at a time of high tension in the region and is expected to heighten debates over prisoner treatment and security policies.
