The chairman of the US House Oversight Committee, James Comer, has issued a subpoena requiring US Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify on April 14. This is as part of the committee's ongoing investigation into the handling of the case of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. According to Comer, the committee is examining whether the federal government properly handled the investigation into Epstein and his associates, including Ghislaine Maxwell.
The committee also seeks to understand how the Justice Department has handled documents and files related to Epstein, after Congress last year passed a law requiring their release for transparency.
However, many lawmakers from both political parties have criticized the publication of these documents, saying that many parts have been covered up or deleted, which they say hinders full transparency.
As the head of the Justice Department, Bondi is considered responsible for decisions on the collection, review, and publication of these files, so the committee wants to ask her directly about this process.
The Justice Department has yet to comment on the call, but Bondi and her deputy, Todd Blanche, are expected to brief members of Congress on the matter.
