Germany will not join Western Allies in recognizing a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly next month.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced this at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who said last month that Canada plans to recognize the state of Palestine at the General Assembly, following similar announcements from France and the United Kingdom, Reuters reports.
"The federal government's position is clear regarding the possible recognition of the state of Palestine. Canada knows this. We will not join this initiative. We do not see that the conditions have been met," Merz said.
Canada announced in late July that it plans to recognize the Palestinian state in September.
In doing so, it joined France and the UK from the G7, a group of the most developed countries, which had previously announced recognition of Palestine.
