According to the Wall Street Journal, which cites sources familiar with the matter, Iran has shown greater flexibility regarding its terms for negotiations with the US on a permanent ceasefire agreement.
According to the report, Iran has dropped the condition that the US must end its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz before any ceasefire negotiations and has also proposed discussing its nuclear program in exchange for a reduction in the US sanctions regime. Iran is also said to be ready to return to the negotiating table in Pakistan as early as next week.
According to sources cited by the WSJ, Iran's proposal goes a step further, offering to discuss Tehran's terms for reopening the Strait of Hormuz if the United States guarantees an end to attacks and blockades of Iranian ports. Previously, Iran wanted the United States to end the blockade as a condition for talks and demanded that Washington agree to end the war before the sides could discuss management of the Strait and its nuclear program.
In addition, under the new proposal, issues related to Iran's nuclear program could be discussed in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions. Iran has told mediators that it is ready to hold talks in Pakistan early next week if Washington accepts the proposal.
