Footage broadcast by Channel 12 shows a violent attack in broad daylight on a French nun on Mount Zion, in Jerusalem, near the Cenacle.
The video shows a man approaching from behind and pushing the nun to the ground. He leaves for a moment, but then returns and kicks her while she is still lying there.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, saying the perpetrator, a 36-year-old man, had been arrested. "This shameful act contradicts the values of respect, coexistence and religious freedom on which Israel is founded," the official statement published on social media said.
However, according to reports, the Christian community on the ground has long been the subject of attacks and discrimination — from spitting on clerics on the streets of the Old City, to restrictions on prayer and movement.
