Voters in New York state will vote today to elect a new mayor.
Zohran Mamdani, who emerged as the Democratic candidate in the June primary, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent in the runoff, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa will compete for the election based on voter choices.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democrat who defeated his closest rival Cuomo in the primary, has a nearly 12-point lead over Cuomo, according to the latest polls. The process, which began in June to choose a new mayor, will conclude today, with Republican candidate Sliwa's chances of winning extremely slim.
According to data from the New York City Board of Elections, voting in the city, which has about 5.1 million registered voters as of February, will continue from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time.
Record turnout in early voting
In the early voting period, which ended Sunday, more than 735,000 New Yorkers cast ballots, setting a new record. Mamdani, the front-runner to win the primary after defeating his closest rival, Cuomo, remains the leading contender, according to the latest polls./TRT Balkan
