According to a report by the American network CNN, the Pentagon has approved the supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, long-range weapons manufactured in the United States of America. This decision is seen as an important step in increasing Kiev's military capabilities, giving it the ability to strike deeper into Russian territory and significantly improving its ability to respond to Moscow's aggression.
CNN sources say the Pentagon has completed a technical and strategic assessment, concluding that supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles will not negatively impact U.S. military reserves. However, the final decision on whether to send the weapons rests with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously stated that Ukraine's possession of such weapons would make Russian President Vladimir Putin "nervous", underlining the powerful strategic effect such a supply would have on the eastern front.
The CNN report comes at a time when Ukraine's Western allies, including the United Kingdom, have intensified discussions to give Kiev more offensive capabilities, in an attempt to balance military power against Russia.
However, a recent visit by President Zelenskyy to the White House did not result in a concrete agreement on the supply of US missiles, although this was one of his main demands. During that meeting, President Trump stated:
"We don't want to give away things we need to defend our country."
According to CNN sources, the Pentagon has confirmed that the decision is no longer a matter of capabilities or logistics, but a political decision that is expected to be made personally by President Trump in the coming days or weeks.
If Washington gives the final green light, the delivery of Tomahawk missiles would constitute one of the most advanced military supplies Ukraine has ever received from the US, with potential consequences for the balance of war and international relations with Russia.
