The US canceled President Donald Trump's planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow sent a memo to Washington outlining its tough demands for a ceasefire with Ukraine, the Financial Times reported on Friday.
Trump and Putin had agreed earlier this month to meet in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss ending the Russia-Ukraine war. But Trump abruptly canceled the summit just days later.
The FT report showed that Russia's Foreign Ministry had sent a memo to Washington setting out its tough demands for a ceasefire, which include territorial concessions, demilitarisation in Ukraine and guarantees that it would never join NATO.
The US then cancelled the summit after a phone call between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the FT reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.
Rubio also reportedly told Trump that Moscow had not shown a willingness to negotiate.
US efforts to broker a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire have gained little support this year, despite Trump's previous claims that he would end the war within days.
The US president also had a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this month, but US military deployments to the country were seen to continue.
