Kimberly Guilfoyle, the United States ambassador to Greece and former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., has been told she must resign from her diplomatic post. The news was confirmed by new White House spokeswoman Katie Zacharia during her first press conference.
Asked by reporters about reports that President Donald Trump could fire Guilfoyle, Zacharia confirmed that the ambassador has been asked to resign.
This is a significant development in the US administration, given Guilfoyle's previous family ties to President Trump and her close relations with the Republican political circle.
However, the spokesperson's statement does not indicate that the resignation has been submitted or that the ambassador has officially been removed from office. Nor was the reason for the request for her removal made public.
The confirmation came during an extremely brief press conference, in which the new spokeswoman only took three questions from reporters.
According to the BBC, the abrupt end of the briefing caused obvious surprise in the room. The British media correspondent at the White House described it as the shortest briefing he had ever attended.
Guilfoyle's requested departure comes after a series of American media publications about her behavior and financial relationships with Republican Party donors.
According to The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, one of the most serious allegations relates to the claim that Guilfoyle had asked Republican donor Eric Deters to pay a personal $100,000 bill on her American Express card, before her confirmation as ambassador in 2025.
In exchange, according to Deters' claims and published messages, she had offered to use her connections to the Trump administration to help him with tax and legal matters.
The reports also include suspicions of accepting inappropriate gifts, favoring the interests of Greek businessmen, and alleged threats against a host country official.
