Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said on Monday it had hit an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, which it said had caught fire. According to Iranian authorities, this is the third tanker hit in two days in the strategic waterway.
In a statement released by its public relations office, the Iranian navy claimed that the ship was hit on Monday morning after it had disabled its navigation system and ignored warnings. According to Tehran's version, the tanker was trying to leave the strait, disrupting order and security in the area.
However, Iranian authorities did not disclose the name of the ship, its flag or the company that operated it. They also did not provide details on how the attack was carried out.
In the same statement, the IRGC Navy warned that any cooperation of merchant ships and oil tankers with the US military in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf would be met with, as it put it, "a decisive response."
