The body responsible for referees, "Pro Ref", has admitted that an "error of judgment" was made during the VAR process in the derby between Manchester United and Manchester City, influencing the decision for Erling Haaland's goal in Pep Guardiola's team's 1-0 victory.
Haaland's goal, scored in the 60th minute at Old Trafford, was initially ruled out for offside. After a VAR review, the decision was overturned and the goal was awarded, after it was determined that the Norwegian forward was in a legal position.
However, “Pro Ref” has clarified that the VAR should have recommended a review to the referee on the monitor, due to the position of Enzo Fernandez during the action. Although Fernandez did not touch the ball, his presence could have influenced the action and therefore the decision was considered subjective.
"The decision on the field was for an offside position against Erling Haaland. This decision was checked by VAR and it was found that he was in a legal position," a Pro Ref spokesperson said.
However, the institution admitted that the VAR had not properly assessed the potential impact of Fernandez's position and should have asked the referee to watch the replay on the monitor.
"We have contacted Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we consider to be an error in judgment. The incident will be reviewed," Pro Ref said in a statement.
The decision has reignited debate over the use of VAR in the Premier League, while Manchester City won the derby 1-0 thanks to Haaland's goal.
