The fastest man in the history of athletics, Usain Bolt, has taken another step into the world of football, registering as a player for English club Wythenshawe Vets.
The 40-year-old's move has been largely a quiet one compared to the big moves in the Premier League transfer window, but the official confirmation from the Football Association makes it one of the most unusual transfers of the season. Bolt will play for a team competing in the ninth tier of English football.
Wythenshawe Vets is a veterans' team from south Manchester that gives former professional footballers the chance to return to the pitch. Bolt, however, won't be the only familiar name in the dressing room.
Former England and Liverpool striker Emile Heskey, former Everton player Oumar Niasse, former Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia, and renowned striker Papiss Cisse have also been registered in the squad.
The list also includes former Manchester City players Stephen Ireland and Nedum Onuoha, while the team also includes Joleon Lescott and Danny Drinkwater, both Premier League winners.
For Bolt, this is not the first time he has attempted to make the transition from athletics to football. The Jamaican has always been a big football fan and a Manchester United supporter.
In 2018, he had a trial period with Australian club Central Coast Mariners. Bolt scored two goals in a friendly match, but ultimately failed to secure a professional contract, as the club could not offer him the required terms.
He has also trained with Stromsgodset in Norway and Borussia Dortmund in Germany, and had previously rejected an offer from Maltese club Valletta, reportedly for financial reasons.
Now, at the age of 40, the world record holder for the 100 meters with a time of 9.58 seconds and the 200 meters with 19.19 seconds, will try a new adventure in English football, this time at the amateur level.
