A party does not lose legitimacy when the law knocks on the door; it loses it when it decides to side with those who have used its logo to cover up their wealth.
This is the dilemma facing the Socialist Party in Albania today. In every neighborhood where old socialists gather, the conversation is no longer about the program, but about the people who have held power and the daily news about tenders, concessions and villas.
The question is not legal, but human: can a party that is seen as closer to the dubious wealth of a few leaders than to the ordinary socialists who have voted their entire lives still be called a leftist force?
Italy in the 1990s once showed how such a story ends. Tangentopoli was not simply the name of a scandal, but the picture of a system where public decision-making had become a source of private wealth. Parties did not collapse simply because politicians were arrested; they collapsed because citizens saw that a part of them had become a shield for networks of interests.
Today, when Albanians hear names like Benet Beci, Belinda Balluku, Erion Veliaj, and Ilir Beqja, they are not simply hearing about individuals, but about people who have held key state positions and who are now facing justice.
All of these have the right to defense; no one should be found guilty in court. But no honest socialist can pretend not to know that a generation of directors and politicians emerging from the “Renaissance” – often without roots in the old tradition of the left, but with strong connections to the corridors of power – has administered massive public funds in the name of the Socialist Party and the vote of ordinary socialists.
Corruption is not just a matter of numbers on a balance sheet. It turns the party into a shield for private wealth. When a high-ranking official is brought to justice, the question is not “will he win the trial?” but “who has trusted him, who has protected him, who has turned a blind eye to his wealth growing while his official salary cannot justify it?”
In normal democracies, political responsibility comes before criminal responsibility. A minister or mayor leaves office when trust is broken, not just when a court decision is made. The party shows that its integrity is more important than the fate of a single person.
In Albania, the opposite often happens: the legal process is experienced as an attack on the party, and the party stands up to defend the person, not the trust of the voters.
If corruption files are proven, a prison sentence is not enough. Without cracking down on illicit wealth – villas, accounts, properties, favored companies, assets of relatives – the system gets the message that corruption is still a profitable “investment.”
