Marco Van Basten, former Ballon d'Or winner and Milan and Dutch national team legend, spoke about the problems of Italian football in an interview with Carlo Pellegatti on the occasion of his new book "50 matches, endless emotions, Milan".
Van Basten said that "foreign owners are the destruction of Italian football", taking Milan as an example.
According to him, currently in Italy there are many foreign owners who have no connection to the history of the clubs and no real interest in them. "It is a pity. It would be very important for Italian football to return to the hands of Italians, so that it can return to the top of Europe", he said.
Speaking about the Italian national team and the World Cup, Van Basten added: "I've seen the Italian national team and now they lack stars. Italy has always had a great goalkeeper, a great defender, a great midfielder and a great striker. Today it's difficult to see these players, and that's strange. Italian football used to dominate the world, today it's not like that anymore."
For the World Cup, he said that he supports the Netherlands, but does not expect much from them, while adding that he will sympathize with Brazil led by Carlo Ancelotti.
