The acting president of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has set June 7 as the date for holding early parliamentary elections.
The decision was made after a meeting with representatives of political parties, where the majority of them supported this date, between two options: May 31 and June 7.
Haxhiu stated that the decision was based on constitutional deadlines, the organizational needs of the Kosovo Central Election Commission, and the importance of the widest possible participation of citizens.
Representatives of the main parties confirmed agreement on this date. The leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Bedri Hamza, said that most parties were in favor of June 7. Representatives from the Democratic League of Kosovo and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo also expressed the same position.
The new elections come after the Kosovo Assembly failed to elect a new president within the constitutional deadline, following the end of Vjosa Osmani's mandate in early April.
The dissolution of the Assembly requires elections to be held within 45 days, while June 7 was the latest possible deadline.
These will be the third parliamentary elections in 18 months, deepening the political crisis in the country. According to analyst Naim Rashiti, frequent elections do not guarantee stability and point to an ongoing institutional crisis.
Meanwhile, the European Union has expressed regret that the parties failed to find a common candidate for president, calling for more political dialogue and the normal functioning of institutions.
