Former Democratic Party presidential candidate Mereme Sela, disqualified from the race on the grounds that she did not have a high public profile, has filed a lawsuit against the Democratic Party of Albania with the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction in Tirana.
In her request, Sela challenges the decision to exclude her from the competition, calling it unjustified and in violation of the principle of equality in competition. She requests that this decision be declared absolutely null and void and that she be reinstated in the competition.
The plaintiff also requests that Sali Berisha's candidacy be declared invalid, arguing that it contradicts the party's statute, which according to her prohibits the re-nomination of the chairman if the party has not won the parliamentary elections.
The lawsuit states that the Democratic Party did not result in a winning force in the 2025 elections, which according to Sela renders Berisha's candidacy invalid and violates the integrity of the electoral process.
Sela also requests the imposition of a precautionary measure for the lawsuit, specifically the immediate suspension of the election process for the chairman of the Democratic Party, scheduled for May 23, 2026, until the conclusion of the trial.
According to her, there is a risk of irreparable damage if the process continues and produces a leader in violation of the party's statute.
