The atmosphere before the World Cup final has been heated not only in the official press conferences, but also in the activities organized off the pitch. FIFA held a special event at the “Fan Fest”, attended by the coaches of Spain and Argentina, Luis de la Fuente and Lionel Scaloni, as well as footballers Rodrigo Hernandez (Rodri) and Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez.
But the main protagonist of the evening was Lionel Messi. The Argentina captain appeared as a special guest at an event moderated by three world sports icons: Novak Djokovic, Kevin Durant and Tom Brady.
During the conversation, Messi spoke about the grand final, but his comments about Spain star Lamine Yamal received particular attention.
"Lamine is an extraordinary footballer. I have followed him closely, as he plays for a club that I love very much. Although he is only 19 years old, he is already one of the most important players in world football. He has many years ahead and the opportunity to write history," Messi declared.
The Argentine star was also asked about the iconic photo taken 19 years ago for a charity calendar, where he appears holding a baby who is now Lamine Yamal.
Messi described it as an extraordinary moment that after so many years, he and Yamal will face each other in the World Cup final.
"It's something incredible. Life surprises you. I took a photo with him when he was just a baby and now we're going to play against each other in the World Cup final. He's one of the best in the world at the moment and I wish him a lot of success," Messi said.
However, the Argentina captain stressed that Spain is not solely dependent on Barcelona's talent.
"It's not just Lamine. Spain has many quality players and plays excellent football. We also have our weapons," said Messi.
The Argentine aims to win the World Cup for the second time in his career, while facing one of the greatest talents in modern football, Lamine Yamal.
