Even when the streets are covered in snow and temperatures drop below freezing, more and more people are seen wearing shorts. The phenomenon has become visible in cities around the world, from university campuses to suburban neighborhoods and gyms.
According to analysis by fashion experts, this trend has several reasons – physical, psychological, and aesthetic.
One of the simplest explanations is related to body temperature. Some people, especially during physical activity, feel hotter than others, so they prefer to keep their legs uncovered to regulate their body temperature and avoid sweating.
Another reason is comfort. Shorts are often more stretchy and comfortable than long pants. Politicians and public figures have also helped normalize this choice, appearing in shorts even in very cold temperatures.
But for some people this is also a way of showing strength and resistance to the cold, a kind of symbolic message that suggests that only the "weak" feel cold.
At the same time, the phenomenon is also related to fashion. At the recent fashion shows in Milan for the 2026 season, several well-known brands presented very short pants made of wool and cotton, combined with long sweaters or blouses.
According to stylists, shorts in winter are not only a practical choice, but also a symbolic warning of spring, a way to "challenge" the cold season and bring the feeling of warm weather earlier.
This is why, despite the temperatures, more and more people continue to go out on the streets with their legs uncovered even in the middle of winter.
