Even in Italy, fake news can spread with incredible speed. This was demonstrated by the case of Milan legend Franco Baresi, about whom false news circulated in recent hours that he had passed away.
The confusion spread so quickly that even Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini posted a message of condolence on social media with the words: “Fly with your tribune, Captain.” Just minutes later, he deleted the post after it was confirmed that the news was fake.
To put an end to the speculation, AC Milan also reacted officially. The club clarified that Franco Baresi is going through a delicate health moment, but categorically denied the news of his death.
"AC Milan denies the false news that has circulated regarding Franco Baresi. Franco is facing a delicate moment and the club is by his side with dedication, as well as by his family. We invite everyone to respect his privacy and not contribute to the spread of unfounded information," the club's response states.
Franco Baresi underwent lung surgery last year to remove a nodule discovered during a routine check-up. The operation was successful and the former Milan captain returned to public life a few months later.
The case shows that, even in countries with consolidated media like Italy, false information can spread rapidly, confusing not only public opinion, but also senior political figures.
