The Joint Panels of the Supreme Court are reviewing today an important issue related to changing the practice for assigning security measures. The initiative was taken by the President of the Supreme Court, Sokol Sadushi, after being initiated by a citizen accused of drug trafficking.
The move has been accompanied by criticism and suspicion, as concerns have been raised that a change in practice could affect the way security measures are set and potentially lead to the release of senior officials accused by SPAK of corruption, including Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj.
During the hearing, prosecutor Arqile Kocca stated that today's case includes two main elements: the unification of judicial practice and the examination of the specific case.
"Today's issue carries issues related to two main points: firstly, the unification of practice and secondly, the specific issue. We request that the session be held behind closed doors due to the issues surrounding the issue. Regarding the unification of practice, it can be open as much as is permitted, but for the specific issue, the media should not be present," said Kocca.
Lawyer Luan Hasneziri also expressed himself along the same lines, stating that he agrees that the discussion on the specific issue should take place behind closed doors.
After discussions, the Joint Panels decided that the court hearing will be held in two phases. The first phase will be related to the unification of judicial practice on security measures and will be held in public. While the second part, where the specific case that brought this issue to the Supreme Court will be addressed, will be held behind closed doors.
The decision expected from the United Colleges to unify the practice could have a wide-ranging impact on how security measures will be applied in the justice system in the future.
