An 80-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment in Prizren in the early hours of Wednesday, and police suspect she was murdered. Her 81-year-old husband has been detained in connection with the incident.
The victim, with the initials LD, was found without signs of life at around 01:30. After examining the body and the crime scene, investigators have raised suspicions of the criminal offense of "Aggravated Murder".
According to the Kosovo Police spokesperson for the Prizren region, Shaqir Bytyqi, the injuries to the woman's body are suspected to have been caused by physical force, without the use of any weapon or other means.
Her husband, BD, was also in the apartment, and was interviewed and, by decision of the State Prosecutor, detained for 48 hours. Police said the couple had no previous reported cases of violence.
The body of the 80-year-old woman has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Pristina, while investigations continue to fully unravel the incident.
The case comes just two days after another serious incident in Kërvasari, Malisheva, where a 25-year-old pregnant woman lost her life after being shot with a gun.
On the evening of August 23, police found the 25-year-old and her injured husband in a bedroom. Both were taken to UCCK, but the young woman, who was 34 weeks pregnant, did not survive her injuries.
Her husband, who was also seriously injured, is considered by the Prosecution as a suspect in the incident. A firearm was also seized at the scene, while the case is being investigated for "Aggravated Murder" and illegal possession of a weapon.
The two murders within a few days, where in both cases suspicions have focused on the victims' spouses, bring back attention to violence against women in Kosovo and its fatal consequences.
