Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, has announced a broad amnesty law aimed at freeing hundreds of political prisoners, in an effort to promote national reconciliation and reduce political tensions in the country.
The initiative covers cases dating back to 1999, but excludes serious crimes such as murder, drug trafficking and corruption. Authorities report that hundreds of people have already been released, while human rights organizations say many more remain behind bars.
Among those released were Albanian citizens. One of them, identified by the initials JN, had been arrested on charges of involvement in an alleged plot against former President Nicolás Maduro and is currently under the care of the Red Cross, awaiting permission to return to Albania.
At the same time, the government also announced the closure of the notorious El Helicoide prison, known for allegations of abuse against prisoners, which is expected to be transformed into a social and sports center.
This decision comes after recent political changes in Venezuela and is seen as a step towards normalizing the situation, although critics are calling for more transparency and fairness in the release process.
