United States President Donald Trump has softened his tone on future federal support for New York following Zohran Maman's landslide election victory, suggesting he is open to providing aid to New York after previously threatening to cut funding, CNN reports.
Trump repeated his assessment that, as he stated, communists, Marxist socialists, and globalists had their chance, but that they "brought only disaster," but stated that he would help New York because he wants that city to succeed.
"Now let's see how the communists do in New York. We'll see how it ends. And we'll help them. We'll help them. We want New York to succeed. We'll help them a little bit, maybe," Trump said during a speech at an economic conference in Miami.
Trump praised the policies of Mamdani, a democratic socialist, as reflecting the views of Democrats in Congress.
"If you want to see what the Democrats in Congress want to do to America, look at the results of yesterday's election in New York, where their party nominated a communist as mayor of the nation's largest city. The decision before all Americans could not be clearer - we have a choice between communism and common sense," Trump said.
Before the New York election, Trump warned that if Mamdani won, he could limit federal funding for New York, beyond the minimum required by law.
He said he would rather support former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo than Mamdani, stating that while he is not a "fan" of Cuomo, given that he has to choose between "a bad Democrat and a communist, he always chooses the bad Democrat."
