The unfavorable results of yesterday's elections in the United States for the Republican Party have been publicly acknowledged by US President Donald Trump, who was seen having breakfast with some conservative lawmakers this morning.
A day after Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York, Trump commented for the first time on the result, calling it inappropriate for Republicans.
"I don't think it was good for Republicans," he told reporters, adding that more in-depth discussions on the issue would take place after the media session concludes.
According to Trump, one of the main reasons that influenced the results of these elections was the shutdown of the federal government, which led to the temporary suspension of the functioning of many agencies and public institutions, due to disagreements between Democrats and Republicans regarding the budget bill.
"A lot of people, based on the polls we've seen, blame us for the government shutdown. That has affected public perception and the results," Trump said. The US president, meanwhile, called on Senate Republicans to act decisively and abolish the filibuster, a parliamentary procedure that allows unlimited debate on bills, often with the aim of delaying or blocking their passage.
"It's time for Republicans to do what they need to do, and that's to abolish the filibuster," Trump said, warning that if this doesn't happen, his party will find itself in a difficult position to pass any future legislative initiatives.
