Three people have died in Sweden after a powerful winter storm hit the Nordic countries, causing transport disruptions and power outages. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Agency (SMHI) has issued warnings of strong winds across much of the country's north as Storm Johannes battered the area.
A man in his 50s died after being hit by a tree at the Kungsberget ski resort in southern Sweden, local media and police reported. Further north, regional electricity utility Hemab said one of its employees had died in a work-related accident.
Police also said a man in his 60s was taken to hospital after being hit by a tree while working in a forest in Hofors, in east-central Sweden, and later died from his injuries.
Tens of thousands of homes in Sweden, Norway and Finland were left without power as a result of the storm. In Sweden, more than 40,000 homes were affected by power outages, while many rail services were canceled, according to Swedish news agency TT.
Many flights, rail and ferry services were cancelled in parts of the Nordic countries, while roads and rail services were disrupted by the stormy conditions.
