Severe tensions and violent clashes were recorded on Saturday evening in Turin during a protest linked to the Askatasuna social center. After dark, groups of autonomists and anarchists broke away from the national procession and attempted to break through the cordons of the security forces.
According to authorities, protesters threw bottles, stones, smoke bombs and homemade rockets made from metal pipes. The incidents took place behind Campus Einaudi and earlier at Corso Regina Margherita 47, the former historic headquarters of the Askatasuna social center, which closed on December 18 after almost thirty years of activity.
The police reacted with tear gas and intervention to disperse the crowd.
The face-to-face confrontation lasted over an hour and a half. During the riots, garbage cans, various items along the streets, and even an armored police vehicle were burned, which was extinguished by the officers themselves.
Everything available was thrown onto the street, including chairs from closed bars and uprooted street poles. Official sources indicate that at least 30 law enforcement officers were injured.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reacted sharply to the events, stating that "a legal eviction was used as a pretext for organized violence," while adding that "in Turin there were no protesters, but enemies of the state."
