Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that his country is considering suing The New York Times and one of its journalists for defamation after publishing an article alleging that Israeli soldiers and prison guards had committed widespread sexual violence against Palestinian prisoners.
According to Reuters, Netanyahu said on Thursday that he had instructed his legal advisers to consider "the strongest legal action" against the newspaper and veteran journalist Nicholas Kristof, who had reported on the matter.
"We will fight these lies both in the court of public opinion and in court. The truth will triumph," Netanyahu said.
However, he did not provide details on where and when this lawsuit could be filed. This is not the first time Netanyahu has threatened legal action against the American newspaper. In August last year, he had also threatened to sue The New York Times for an article that addressed the issue of hunger in Gaza, but it did not materialize.
