Two gunmen who killed 15 people on Sydney's Bondi Beach on Sunday have been identified by local media as Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram, 24. Australian police confirmed the perpetrators were father and son. The 50-year-old died at the scene, while the son is in a critical condition in hospital.
Authorities say the attack targeted Jewish people attending a Hanukkah event. The victims include a 10-year-old girl, a British-born rabbi, a former police officer and a Holocaust survivor.
Police said two improvised explosive devices were also found near the scene, which were neutralized. Investigations are ongoing to fully elucidate the motive for the attack, including reports of extremist elements.
A key role in preventing further escalation of violence was played by citizen Ahmed al-Ahmed, who was filmed snatching a gun from one of the attackers. According to his parents, he was shot four or five times in the shoulder and is receiving medical treatment. His action has been widely hailed as heroic by authorities and the public.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he would push for tougher gun laws, revealing that the older gunman had a firearms permit for recreational hunting.
