A serious incident has recently occurred in Australia, where at least 10 people have lost their lives after two armed individuals dressed in black opened fire on the crowd during celebrations of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach, in New South Wales.
According to international media reports, eight people have been taken to hospital for medical attention, while the area around the beach remains cordoned off by police. Suspicions about the two people involved have resulted in their arrest. According to videos published online, one of the attackers was neutralized by a person present at the scene.
Witnesses to the event have recounted the horror of the difficult moments, indicating that at first they did not understand what was happening, and then they hoped that the police would come to their aid as soon as possible.
Elizabeth Mealey, a former journalist and Randwick resident, was quoted by national broadcaster ABC as saying: "We thought it was fireworks, but it wasn't. It was something much worse. It's terrifying. It seems like it took a long time to hear the sirens. Now a helicopter and an ambulance are arriving. It's chaos and we don't really know what's going on."
She added, “We heard gunshots of various types and eventually we hoped it was the police returning fire. Then the noise got a little fainter, but it kept getting louder. At this point, we assume it’s over, but no one knows for sure.”
The incident has caused alarm and a massive police operation continues in the Bondi Beach area.
