Hungary has gone on security alert after explosives were discovered near the TurkStream gas pipeline, a development that comes just days before crucial elections in the country.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban immediately called an emergency meeting of the National Defense Council, considering the incident a conspiracy before the elections.
According to official information, two backpacks with explosives and detonators were discovered by the Serbian army near the village of Tresnjevac, close to the border with Hungary.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić confirmed that it was a highly destructive explosive and stated that he had immediately informed the Hungarian government about the development.
The incident comes at a sensitive political moment, as the ruling Fidesz party, led by Orbán, is reported to be at a disadvantage in the latest polls ahead of the election. This has prompted strong reactions from the opposition.
Opposition leader Peter Magyar accused the government of "inciting panic" and suggested the incident may have been staged for electoral purposes.
