France has demanded the resignation of the United Nations special rapporteur on the Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, after her recent statements caused a strong reaction in Paris.
According to French authorities, the reaction came after the Albanian woman's speech on February 7 at the Al-Jazeera Forum in Doha, where she participated via video message. In her intervention, which was broadcast at the event, which was also attended by Hamas leader Khaled Meshal, she is said to have described Israel as a "common enemy of humanity."
The statements became the subject of international controversy. Later, in a reaction on the social network X, Albanese published the video of the speech and clarified that her statement referred to “the system that has allowed genocide in Palestine,” emphasizing that it is the “common enemy of humanity.”
The issue has sparked new debates about the role and positions of UN special rapporteurs, while it remains to be seen whether France's request will be followed by concrete action at the international level.
