In an interview with Polsatnews, he stated that “the path towards a Polish nuclear capability, with full respect for international regulations, is the path we should follow.” As president, Nawrotski also holds the post of commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
He argued that Poland's security should be strengthened due to its geographical location, as the country borders Ukraine and Belarus, regions close to areas of tension. However, he did not give a specific deadline for when such a program could be launched. Asked about a possible Russian reaction, the president replied that Moscow "can react aggressively to anything."
His statement appears to have caused reservations within the government. Defense Minister Władysław Koszyniak, according to the PAP agency, stressed that the issue of nuclear weapons is “the most sensitive of all sensitive issues.” He spoke in favor of developing national research and technological capabilities, but suggested that concrete actions are more important than public statements.
Poland, a member of the European Union and NATO, is considered one of Kiev's closest allies in political and military terms.
With this stance, Nawrotski goes further than former President Andrzej Duda, who in 2024 declared that the country was ready to host American nuclear weapons within the framework of the NATO nuclear-sharing agreement. The alliance had announced at the time that it had no plans to expand their deployment.
For decades, the United States has kept nuclear weapons in several European countries, believed to include Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Turkey, although the exact locations are not officially confirmed.
