Nearly three weeks after the start of the war, Iranian missiles and drones continue to strike energy facilities and other targets in Gulf countries and the wider Middle East region.
Neutralizing Iran's arsenal of missiles and drones is one of the main war objectives for the United States and Israel, which began the conflict on February 28. However, experts say this could be very difficult.
Before the war, Iran had the largest stockpile of ballistic missiles in the Middle East, according to the US Office of National Intelligence. The arsenal included missiles with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers, capable of hitting Israeli territory, and speeds of up to 17,000 kilometers per hour.
Estimates of the size of the arsenal vary. The Israeli military has estimated it at around 2,500 missiles, while some analysts believe the number may have been as high as 6,000.
The Iranian missile program is thought to have been developed based on North Korean and Russian technologies, while also benefiting from Chinese technological assistance.
Many of Iran's missile bases are located around the capital Tehran. In several provinces, including Kermanshah and Semnan, so-called underground "missile cities" have also been discovered, built to protect the arsenal from air attacks.
Iran is also one of the largest drone producers in the region. By some estimates, its military industry can produce up to 10,000 drones per month. The Shahed drones, much cheaper than ballistic missiles, have also been widely used in the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, according to Donald Trump, Iran's missile capability is "virtually destroyed." But other American and Israeli officials acknowledge that Iran still retains a significant portion of its arsenal.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Iran's missile and drone capabilities have been severely damaged, but the fight to completely neutralize them continues.
