German company Adidas has announced that the iconic trefoil logo will return to the team jerseys for the World Cup, for the first time since 1990.
The classic trefoil logo was the symbol of Adidas on many of the most famous football shirts in the 1980s and at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. It was later replaced by the three-slanted stripes logo that is used today.
The return of the trefoil logo ties into the trend of retro designs in football. Adidas has unveiled new second kits for around 25 national teams, many of which are inspired by the aesthetics of the '90s.
Among them are colorful designs for Japan, motifs reminiscent of cherry blossoms for Chile, and pink and blue combinations for Belgium.
For many fans, the return of the trefoil logo is a nostalgic homage to the visual style of the 1990 World Cup and a return of one of the most iconic symbols in the history of football jerseys.
