A dramatic increase in killings among the Palestinian community in Israel is turning into an open social and political crisis, as citizens demand urgent action from the authorities. Recent cases – a mother killed near a supermarket, a man shot after leaving a mosque and a doctor executed while on duty – have deepened the sense of insecurity in the country’s Arab communities.

Palestinians with Israeli citizenship make up about 20% of the country's population, but statistics show a stark disparity in the handling of crimes. According to data from the Israeli parliament and the Eilaf think tank, only about 15% of murders in Arab communities are solved, compared to about 65% in Jewish communities.

Record killings and public anger

Last year was considered the bloodiest for this community, with 252 victims, while in the first weeks of this year alone dozens of deaths have been recorded. The situation has prompted massive protests in cities such as Sakhnin and Tel Aviv, where thousands of citizens – including Jewish Israelis – have demanded immediate state intervention against organized crime.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has called the situation "unacceptable" and has called for the fight against crime in the Arab community to become a national priority.

Accusations of inaction and political polarization

Many victims' families and activists accuse the government of not acting with the same intensity as in cases affecting the Jewish community. Strong criticism has been directed at National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, under whose tenure the number of murders in the Arab community has increased significantly, according to monitoring organizations.

The government, on the other hand, states that it is investing additional resources to fight crime and that investigations are ongoing, while the police deny accusations of discrimination in law enforcement.

A crisis that goes beyond statistics

Analysts warn that the rise in violence is linked not only to organized crime, but also to years of social marginalization and lack of investment in Arab communities. Protesters are demanding security, justice and a long-term strategy to stop the normalization of killings in public spaces.

Amid this tense climate, many families continue to wait for justice for their relatives, while the crisis is turning into a major debate over equality, security, and the role of the state in protecting all its citizens.
