The race for the FIFA presidency could take an unexpected turn, as new names are being mentioned as possible candidates to challenge Gianni Infantino in the upcoming elections to lead world football's most important institution.
According to French media outlet L'Equipe, a woman could run against Infantino in the elections due to be held in Rabat, Morocco, in March next year. The report says UEFA is considering backing Michele Kang, president of French club Olympique Lyonnais and one of the most influential figures in women's football.
A possible endorsement from UEFA would give a new dimension to the race for the FIFA presidency, opening up the possibility of a new challenge to Infantino, who intends to continue leading the organization.
Michele Kang is a well-known name in women's football, and her inclusion in the presidential race would be a significant development for the representation of women in the leadership of world football.
However, Kang is not the only figure mentioned as a possible alternative. Another name is Lise Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Association, who has gained weight in debates about the direction and governance of European football.
So far, the possibility of these two figures running remains in the review phase and has not been officially confirmed. Developments in the coming months are expected to clarify whether Gianni Infantino will face an opponent in the race for the FIFA presidency.
