Former Swiss footballer Ramon Vega has confirmed his candidacy for FIFA president, becoming Gianni Infantino's first challenger in the upcoming elections to lead world football's top institution.
Vega, 55, is no stranger to attempts to take over FIFA. The former defender had previously tried to run in the 2015, 2019 and 2022 elections, but in neither case did he manage to secure the necessary support from FIFA's five member federations, a requirement to officially enter the race.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the former Tottenham and Celtic player said his decision to run was linked to the need for change in the way international football is run. Vega is calling for fundamental reforms and a new approach to the governance of FIFA.
"Football does not belong to presidents, confederations or officials. Football is bigger than any position, individual or institution. FIFA needs a new direction and fundamental reform," Vega declared.
To officially secure the candidacy, the Swiss must receive the support of at least five FIFA member associations. In addition to this criterion, he must also prove that he has worked in the football industry for at least two of the last five years.
On the other side of the race is expected to be Gianni Infantino, who is seeking a fourth and final term at the helm of FIFA. Infantino has been president of the organization since 2016 and the upcoming elections will determine the direction of FIFA for the next term.
The deadline for submitting candidacies is November 18, while the FIFA presidential election will take place in March next year. It remains to be seen whether Vega will be able to secure the support required from member federations and turn his candidacy into a formal challenge to Infantino.
