In recent days, a debate has been raging in the Albanian sports media about the Brazilian volleyball player of Dinamo, Nayara Ferreira, against whom doubts have been raised about her gender, which has led to her suspension from sports activities. The federation has asked the athlete to undergo a gender test, while the issue has received widespread coverage on social networks.
In a message sent to the "Albania Live" show on Top Channel, Nayara Ferreira reacted publicly, calling the situation "terrible and unfair":
"It's been hard, but people will regret doing this injustice. I'm just a girl who has the right to exist, to dress and act as I feel good and true. I'm not a fake woman, I'm a strong woman, with a lot of struggle behind me."
The athlete adds that she will not give in to prejudice:
"I have always fought to achieve my goals and I will not accept these people bringing me down and trashing me for no reason. I am Nayara and I am free to be who I want, like any other woman in this world."
Ferreira's case is expected to be addressed by the relevant sports institutions, while in public opinion it has opened a broad debate on the rights and respect for gender identity in sports.
