Colombian football has been shocked by the death of young midfielder Santiago Castrillón, a talent for Millonarios and the Colombian national team for the ages. The footballer, born in 2007, passed away in Bogotá after being rushed to hospital following a serious condition he suffered on the pitch during the U20 derby against Independiente Santa Fe.
The 18-year-old lost consciousness during the match held on Saturday, March 21, and was immediately transported to intensive care at the Fundación CardioInfantil hospital in the Colombian capital, where he fought for his life until the night between Saturday and Sunday.
Castrillón had been part of Millonarios' academy since 2021 and was considered one of the club's most promising talents. In early 2026, he had also received an invitation to join the Colombian U19 national team.
The Millonarios club reacted with a touching message:
"Today football stops. The blue heart is broken. Today pain overwhelms us, filling us with helplessness and sadness."
Condolences also came from renowned striker Radamel Falcao, who wrote that football has lost "a boy full of dreams, with extraordinary talent and a bright future."
His death has caused a wave of reactions and pain throughout Colombian football.
