Portugal is restricting the ability of doctors to prescribe weight-loss drugs and sensors that monitor blood sugar levels, amid concerns they are being used inappropriately.
Starting Friday, only doctors in four medical specialties will be able to prescribe glucose sensors and medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists.
Used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, these medications help people lose weight by mimicking a hormone that makes them feel fuller for longer.
However, injectable medications are in high demand, which has caused problems in their supply to the market.
