Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been involved in a serious security incident while leaving Ukraine, after a train behind him was hit by a Russian drone near the border with Poland. The attack occurred on the Kiev-Warsaw railway line, just minutes after the train carrying Johnson and several other European officials had passed through the area.
According to international media reports, Johnson was traveling on a special train from Kiev to Poland, along with former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and Günter Sautter, a close advisor to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. During the journey, the passengers received an evacuation warning due to the threat of Russian drones. Their train stopped near the Polish border and, after it was assessed that there were no more drones in the area, continued its journey.
Just minutes later, another passenger train traveling on the same line was hit by a Russian drone near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, about two kilometers from the Polish border. The train, carrying more than 200 passengers, had been evacuated in advance and there were no casualties or injuries.
Carl Bildt posted a video of the evacuation on social media and explained that the train that was hit was not the one he and Johnson were on, but the train that arrived just a few minutes after them. He described the safety system as "very good", noting that passengers were evacuated in time before the drone hit the train.
Boris Johnson also reacted after the incident, condemning the Russian attack. The former British prime minister described it as a "random and senseless" attack, while sharply criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin for attacks on Ukrainian railway infrastructure. Johnson said that Ukrainian railways and their workers have faced the risk of Russian attacks for years.
According to the Ukrainian state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, the attack on the train was part of a wider wave of Russian attacks on infrastructure in western Ukraine. The company said the rail network was on high alert and that timely warning made it possible to avoid casualties.
The incident occurred after a security conference in Kiev, attended by several prominent political and security figures from Europe and the United States. The attack near the Polish border has raised concerns about the spread of the risk of war ever closer to NATO territory.
