The Deputy Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo from the ranks of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Vlora Çitaku, has stated that new parliamentary elections could be held at the end of 2025.
She stressed that this is a consequence of the current political crisis that has gripped the country following the last elections, which were held almost eight months ago.
"At the moment we are in, I consider that new parliamentary elections are inevitable [...] It will be technically impossible for new parliamentary elections to be organized before the end of the run-off [for local elections]. New parliamentary elections, of course, based on calendar deadlines, could take place towards the end of the year," she assessed in an interview for "Kosova Press" published on Sunday.
The Vetëvendosje Movement has declared the process of constituting the Kosovo Assembly complete despite the failure to elect the fifth vice-president of the new legislative body, who belongs to the Serbian community.
However, this matter has gone to the Constitutional Court, which has imposed a temporary measure prohibiting the deputies from taking further action, as well as prohibiting them from conducting any procedure in order to form the new government until September 30.
In this unusual situation, the country is stuck between an incumbent government lacking full legitimacy, and a new government that has not yet taken shape due to the lack of a governing structure in the Kosovo Assembly, risking the country heading towards extraordinary elections, in a turbulent geopolitical period.
