Serbia releases two Kosovar citizens detained on suspicion of war crimes

Kosovo citizens Bashkim and Xhemajl Emini have been released by Serbian authorities, their families announced.

"They have been released, they are healthy and well. They have gone to Germany, to their own country," Jusuf Emini, the brother of the two released, told Radio Free Europe.

Bashkimi was released three days ago, while Xhemajli was released the day before, added Jusuf Emini.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora has not yet confirmed the release of the Emini brothers.

The Emini brothers were stopped by Serbian authorities at the border between Serbia and Hungary on August 14.

After their detention, the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs said they were stopped at the Horgoš border crossing. Serbia claimed they were detained on suspicion of committing war crimes against the civilian population with members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

This ministry claimed that the two were suspected of kidnapping a Serb with the initials JM in Rahovec in 1999, sending him to an unknown destination, and nothing has been known about him since then.

Their detention came at a time when Serbian authorities have been increasingly detaining Albanians accused of collaborating with or being part of the KLA. However, there are also cases where people are detained for various reasons.

In July, Serbian authorities arrested Lulzim Halili on suspicion of being a member of the KLA. The KLA veterans' organization has denied this claim.

The KLA was a political-military force that fought for the liberation of Kosovo from Serbian rule in the period 1990-1999.

Meanwhile, Behar Preniqi was also detained at the Batrovci border crossing point, on the border between Croatia and Serbia, in early August. The charges have not yet been made public.

Kosovo authorities have always considered these arrests arbitrary and have demanded their release.

Kosovo and Serbia reached an Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in 2013, with the mediation of the European Union, but there has been almost no cooperation between them on war crimes cases./ REL
