Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his sons, but has not provided details on the timing of the incident, the identity of the boy allegedly targeted, or how close the attempt was to success.
The statement was made during a telephone interview with Israeli television Channel 14, at a time of high tensions between Israel and Iran.
"Iran tried to kill one of my sons," Netanyahu said, without specifying whether he was referring to his eldest son, Yair Netanyahu, who lives in Miami, or the other son.
The Israeli prime minister used this claim to argue that protecting officials and political candidates should not be considered a luxury. He demanded that Israeli authorities guarantee adequate security measures for candidates for the post of prime minister.
So far, Iranian authorities have not given an official reaction to Netanyahu's accusation.
The statement comes in a tense security climate between the two countries and on the eve of general elections in Israel, adding to concerns about threats to political figures and their families.
