In November 1990, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher left 10 Downing Street in tears after more than 11 years in power. She was ousted by her own party, weakened by internal tensions and an unexpected opponent.
On November 22, 1990, after failing to secure enough support in the Conservative leadership race, Thatcher was forced to resign. Before leaving for Buckingham Palace for a final meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, she said she was leaving the country “in a much better state,” although her face suggested otherwise. Ironically, her increasingly authoritarian style of leadership became the main reason for the overthrow.
As Britain's first female prime minister, she won three consecutive elections and ushered in a polarizing political era. Thatcher fought bitter battles with unions, the opposition and often her own cabinet. But the very party that had raised her to the top also dealt her the final blow.
The crisis began with the controversial “poll tax”, which sparked violent protests in London in March 1990. Many Conservative MPs feared the policy would cost them votes. However, it was the issue of the UK’s relationship with Europe that ultimately undermined the foundations of her leadership.
The key figure in Thatcher’s downfall was Sir Geoffrey Howe – once a close ally and known for his calm style. Undervalued by Thatcher, Howe resigned in November 1990 and delivered one of the most scathing speeches in parliamentary history, accusing the prime minister of undermining British negotiators in Europe. His speech was seen as the final signal to her rivals.
Shortly thereafter, Michael Heseltine – known as “Tarzan” – announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Conservative Party. The start of the leadership contest reinforced the belief that Thatcher had lost control. Although she declared: “I will fight to the end”, support within the party collapsed irrevocably.
In less than a week, the era of the "Iron Lady" ended – not by elections, but by the political knife of her closest associates.
