American fashion designer Willy Chavarria has apologized after criticism that a shoe model, created in collaboration with Adidas Originals, was "appropriating" the traditions of indigenous artisans in Mexico.
The “Oaxaca Slip-On” model was inspired by traditional leather sandals called huaraches, made for centuries by indigenous communities. Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, publicly criticized the company, saying the product was manufactured in China without consultation or recognition of the communities that originated the design.
"I deeply regret that this design was not developed in direct and meaningful collaboration with the Oaxacan community," Chavarria said in a statement to the BBC, adding that the aim was to "honor the cultural and artistic spirit of Oaxaca."
Adidas, in an official statement, admitted the mistake and promised respectful dialogue with the Zapotec community of Villa Hidalgo Yalálag, as well as discussions about “restitution” for the damage caused. The company has removed the promotional images from social media.
Mexico's Ministry of Culture confirmed that Adidas has requested a meeting with authorities to "repair the damage" and recognize the cultural wealth of indigenous communities.
Chavarria, who previously held the position of senior vice president of design at Calvin Klein, said this case "fell below the standards of respect and cooperation that Oaxaca and its people deserve."
