The GJKKO accepted this Tuesday the request of former Minister of Health, Ilir Beqaj, to stay outside the cage during court hearings. The decision is expected to be implemented from the next hearing, after the court notifies the General Directorate of Prisons to take the appropriate measures.
Senior officials accused of corruption have often described being held in cages as inhumane and degrading treatment. Beqaj is facing justice in connection with the sterilization affair.
However, what is striking is the fact that the same standard was not applied to two other officials, Ilir Meta and Erion Veliaj, who submitted similar requests to remain outside the cage during the trial. In their cases, the GJKKO did not accept these requests.
We recall that Meta and Veliaj are also accused of corruption, laundering the proceeds of crime and concealing income.
