FIFA has officially opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Federation, following the display of a banner with political content and several incidents recorded during the 2026 World Cup.
The investigation is related to the banner "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Falkland Islands are Argentine"), which Argentina's footballers displayed during celebrations after their victory over England in the semi-final in Atlanta. The Falkland Islands are administered by the United Kingdom, while Argentina continues to claim them as its territory.
In the official announcement, FIFA does not directly mention the banner, but refers to "inappropriate messages" and the possible violation of rules that prohibit the use of sporting events for demonstrations of an unsportsmanlike or political nature.
In addition, the Argentine Federation is also being investigated for alleged discriminatory chants and gestures, delays in the start of matches, deficiencies in security organization, and the throwing of objects by fans.
In separate disciplinary proceedings, FIFA is also investigating players Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina and official Roberto Ayala for incidents that occurred after the final loss to Spain. Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are also under investigation for alleged unsporting conduct.
FIFA announced that all persons and parties involved will have the opportunity to present their defense before the Disciplinary Committee makes a final decision.
